After GHS 650bn Appropriation, No Beneficiary of 24-Hour Economy Yet – Oppong Nkrumah

Ranking Member on Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has criticised the government over the implementation of its flagship 24-hour Economy programme, claiming that despite the appropriation of about GHS 650 billion over the past two years, no Ghanaian has yet benefited from the initiative.

According to the former Information Minister, the government has allocated substantial public funds since assuming office, but the promised economic transformation through the 24-hour Economy policy has not materialised.

Hon. Oppong Nkrumah argued that while the programme was presented as a key strategy to create jobs, increase productivity, and stimulate economic growth, there is still no evidence of beneficiaries on the ground.

He questioned the pace of implementation and urged the government to account for the resources appropriated and provide clarity on when Ghanaians can expect to see tangible results from the policy.

The 24-hour Economy programme was one of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s flagship campaign promises, aimed at encouraging round-the-clock production and service delivery through incentives, infrastructure, and policy support for businesses operating beyond traditional working hours.

The government has maintained that implementation is underway, with several projects and interventions expected to support the rollout of the policy. However, the opposition insists that Ghanaians are yet to experience its promised benefits.

Hon. Oppong Nkrumah made the remarks while commenting on the government’s handling of the programme, renewing calls for greater transparency and accountability in its implementation.
