Qualified Ghanaian nurses and other health professionals could soon have access to new employment opportunities in the United States following a fresh partnership between Ghana and the City of Columbus, Ohio.
The initiative, facilitated by the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA), brings together the City of Columbus, Ghana’s Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, and the Ministry of Health. The parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at creating a structured pathway for qualified Ghanaian health professionals to take up professional opportunities in Columbus.
The discussions began earlier this year after a delegation from the Office of the Mayor of Columbus visited the GEA to explore possible areas of cooperation. The talks later expanded to Ghana’s Labour and Health Ministries as officials worked on how the movement of health professionals could meet employment, regulatory and professional requirements.
Under the arrangement, issues such as recruitment, selection, employment conditions and professional requirements are expected to be clearly outlined. The participating institutions have also emphasized the need to protect the rights, welfare and dignity of Ghanaian professionals who eventually participate in the programme.
The partnership is also expected to encourage professional exchange and knowledge-sharing between Ghana and the United States. For many Ghanaian nurses seeking international opportunities, the development could open another formal route to pursue employment in the American healthcare sector, although participation will remain subject to applicable laws, licensing requirements and agreed employment conditions.
