Ghana Armed Forces Launch Nationwide Flood-Control Operation to Clear Drains and Waterways

The Ghana Armed Forces is set to deploy military personnel, engineers, and specialized equipment across the country as part of a nationwide operation aimed at tackling persistent flooding challenges in both urban and rural communities.

According to authorities, the operation will focus on clearing major drains, streams, and waterways that have become blocked by waste, silt, and illegal structures—factors that have contributed significantly to flooding in recent years, especially during heavy rainfall seasons.

The military also stated that any structures illegally built within waterways or drainage paths and identified as posing an immediate threat to public safety will be removed without delay. Officials say the move is intended to restore the natural flow of water and reduce the risk of destruction to homes, roads, and other infrastructure.

This intervention is expected to complement ongoing efforts by local authorities and disaster management agencies to improve drainage systems nationwide. It also signals a more forceful approach by the state to enforce environmental and building regulations in flood-prone areas.
