FeaturedTeachers across Ghana have resumed classroom duties after their unions suspended a nationwide strike over unpaid promotion arrears, salary concerns and outstanding allowances. The government has outlined timelines for settling some of the payments, while affected schools are considering extra lessons to help students make up for lost academic time.
The Parliamentary Minority is urging the government to move quickly to settle the issues that have kept thousands of teachers away from the classroom. GNAT, NAGRAT and PRETAG began their industrial action on September 25 over unpaid promotion-related arrears and other outstanding conditions of service.
Teacher unions are threatening industrial action if newly promoted teachers are not placed on their appropriate salary scales by Monday, August 31. The Education Ministry is scheduled to meet the unions on the same day in an effort to resolve the dispute and prevent disruption to schools.
