Acting Rent Control Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, has urged the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, to urgently intervene in what he describes as the exploitation of students through excessively high hostel accommodation charges on the University of Ghana campus.

According to him, many students are being burdened with exorbitant fees for hostel facilities, a situation he believes is becoming increasingly unsustainable and unfair. He stressed that such practices, if left unchecked, could worsen the financial pressure on students and their families.

The concern comes amid growing complaints about the rising cost of student accommodation at the University of Ghana, where demand for limited on-campus housing continues to drive up prices in the private hostel market.

Frederick Opoku is therefore calling on the Education Minister to work with relevant authorities to regulate hostel pricing and ensure that students are not taken advantage of. He insists that decisive action is needed to restore fairness and affordability in student housing.

The appeal adds to ongoing public debate about accommodation challenges in tertiary institutions, with many stakeholders pushing for stronger regulation of private hostel operators around university campuses.
