President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that the government is moving forward with plans to establish a new national airline as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s aviation sector, improve international connectivity, and deepen trade and economic relations with countries across Africa and beyond.

Speaking on the initiative, Mahama emphasized that a national carrier would play a strategic role in positioning Ghana as a major aviation hub in West Africa while creating jobs for pilots, engineers, cabin crew, and other aviation professionals. He noted that the project is expected to support tourism, facilitate business travel, and enhance the movement of goods and services.

The President revealed that a task force established to oversee the project has been working on a roadmap and operational framework for the proposed airline. According to government officials, the airline is expected to operate through partnerships with private investors and industry experts to ensure sustainability and efficiency.

The move comes more than two decades after the collapse of Ghana Airways, which ceased operations in the mid-2000s. Authorities believe a new national carrier could restore Ghana’s presence in international aviation and provide direct links to key destinations across Africa, Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia.

If successfully implemented, the initiative is expected to complement ongoing investments in airport infrastructure and contribute significantly to Ghana’s broader economic transformation agenda.
