President John Mahama Says Government Has Not Taken Any International Loan Since Assuming Office
President John Dramani Mahama has stated that his administration has not contracted any international loans since returning to office, insisting that the government has been financing its major development projects using domestic resources.
Speaking on the government’s economic management, President Mahama revealed that no international loan agreement has been taken to Parliament for approval since his administration assumed office, describing it as evidence that the country has not borrowed externally.
“Since we came into office, we haven’t taken any international loan agreement to Parliament. That means we haven’t borrowed any loan. All the money that you see us using for the Big Push and everything is our own money,” President Mahama said.
According to the President, flagship government initiatives, including the Big Push infrastructure programme, are being funded through internally generated resources rather than external borrowing.
He suggested that the government’s approach reflects a commitment to prudent fiscal management while pursuing key national development projects without increasing Ghana’s external debt burden.
The President’s remarks come amid ongoing public discussions about Ghana’s economic recovery, debt management, and the financing of major infrastructure projects. His comments are expected to fuel further debate over the government’s fiscal strategy and its ability to sustain development without relying on international loans.
Supporters of the administration have welcomed the statement as a sign of disciplined economic management, while critics are likely to seek further details on the funding sources for the government’s ambitious programmes.
President Mahama maintained that the government remains focused on delivering its development agenda while ensuring responsible management of the country’s finances.
