Government to Launch Diaspora National Service Programme for Young Ghanaians Abroad
The Government of Ghana is set to introduce a Diaspora National Service programme aimed at strengthening ties between young Ghanaians born and raised abroad and their homeland while encouraging them to contribute to the country’s development.
The initiative was announced by the Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Office of the President, Kofi Okyere-Darko, during the maiden Ghana Diaspora Students Forum.
According to him, the programme is designed to give young members of the Ghanaian diaspora the opportunity to reconnect with their roots through a structured national service experience in Ghana before they begin their university education.
Mr. Okyere-Darko explained that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to deepen engagement with the Ghanaian diaspora and inspire young people living overseas to actively participate in the country’s growth and development.
He noted that exposing participants to Ghana’s culture, institutions and development priorities at an early stage would help strengthen their identity and foster a lasting connection with the country.
The proposed programme is also expected to create opportunities for diaspora youth to share their knowledge, skills and international experiences while gaining a better understanding of Ghana’s social, cultural and economic landscape.
The announcement was made at the maiden Ghana Diaspora Students Forum, an event that brought together students and stakeholders to discuss ways of strengthening relationships between Ghana and its global diaspora community.
The Diaspora National Service programme is expected to become a key initiative in the government’s efforts to build stronger links with young Ghanaians living abroad and encourage them to play an active role in the nation’s future development.
